CANVAS ART THAT FITS YOUR SPACE
The 1st question we often get from clients is “How big should my painting be?” In general, the canvas should take up 57% – 75% of any wall that isn’t covered by furniture or moldings. While there are no hard and fast rules to hanging art, your selection shall please your view at first glance and not wider than the size of furniture below, if any. The general rule of thumb we use is that artwork should be about 57-75% of the width of the furniture, and this applies to a single piece of art or a grouping.
We’ve created a cheat sheet. Measure your wall and use the reference measurements to determine the perfect size for your space. A high impact picture speaks a thousand words, so I usually inclined towards larger pieces. Tip: Sometimes I find it’s more affordable and creative to hang a collage instead of one enormous piece though. So get started with your imagination and make the wall meaningful.
|WIDTH OF ARTWORK||WIDTH OF WALL|
|1. 22″ – 30″||1. 40″|
|2. 28.5″ – 37.5″||2. 50″|
|3. 34″ – 45″||3. 60″|
|4. 40″ – 52″||4. 70″|
|5. 45.5″ – 60″||5. 80″|
WALL DECOR SIZE CALCULATION FORMULA
As a rule of thumb, the width and length of your canvas art should fall within the range of the calculation below:
- Measure the width and length of your wall
- Multiply the width and length by 57% and 75%
ART OVER A SOFA
Your canvas prints should be 2/3 to 3/4 the width of your sofa. The artwork should never be wider than the sofa or couch. If you opt for 2-5 smaller pieces rather than one large piece, consider leaving ~4.5″ – 8″ between each piece. It should be hung 6” – 12” above the top of your couch.

Final note. When choosing the artwork for your home, what’s more, important is the meaning and you should love it. Preserve your memory with a customised canvas print and that shall be more valuable than any generic artwork available.
